Statement from Joy Morrissey on planned closure of the Nationwide in Burnham:
In recent days I have received a great deal of correspondence from constituents regarding the planned closure of the Nationwide branch in Burnham.
I was very disappointed to hear of these plans, Nationwide is the last bank branch in Burnham and its closure will have a significant effect on local residents. Communities left without these facilities are disadvantaged at the best of times but during a national crisis like this the impact would be even more keenly felt.
This week I have spoken to and received correspondence from local residents and local Councillors to hear the concerns of constituents. I have virtually met with senior staff at Nationwide to convey these concerns and my own objections to the proposed action.
In light of these conversations and meetings, I have written to the Chancellor Rishi Sunak to ask if the Treasury is be able to take measures to prevent closure, at least for the course of the current crisis.
