Good to meet with local farmers to hear their concerns about UK food security and the challenges they face producing more food locally in Buckinghamshire.
Farmers work incredibly hard year-round and always need seasonal labour during peak times of harvest and planting. As a young person I spent a couple summers working on a farm at peak harvest times and although it was backbreaking work it showed me how food & agricultural production works and gave me a deep appreciation of the challenges many farmers face.
I would encourage any young person in Bucks (particularly if you care about environmental issues and sustainability) to spend a season working for a local farmer - you will probably never find a more physically demanding job and it will give you a lifetime of appreciation for the challenges facing UK agricultural production, our green environment and how vital it is we promote British grown food.
We also discussed the need to protect our agricultural greenbelt land within the South Bucks area. Most of the beautiful greenbelt land we all enjoy and cherish is actually cared for and maintained by local farmers who own the land or rent the land from Bucks Council and other land owners. If we want to protect our green belt we need to protect our agricultural greenbelt and work with our farmers long term to protect our green spaces for future generations.
Finally we discussed fly-tipping and working more closely with Thames Valley Police & Buckinghamshire Council to crack down on this serious issue. #ukfarming #buybritish #britishfarming #greenbelt #greenspace
